Insurance secretary Lori Winston is a delightful June dividend

Because insurance companies evoke images of monolithic statistical tables and multipage rate charts and contracts, we were especially pleased when we recently discovered one that offered a surprise dividend far more to our taste. Her name is Lori Winston, and she cuts a fine actuarial figure as girl Friday for a lucky Los Angeles insurance exec. Daughter of a captain in the L.A. fire department, 19-year-old Miss June attributes her healthy good looks to the beneficent rays of the golden California sun, in which she spends as much time as she can, preferably in sufficient seclusion to permit indolent, allover tanning. But she’s also an active sportswoman, with a strong preference for the water-borne life. As she puts it, “I love everything outdoorsy, especially sailing. In fact, I’m saving up to buy a Tahiti ketch – and spend the rest of my life cruising to the world’s most exotic ports of call.” But that’s only one ambition of this girl. She also wants to be an artist, plans to take lessons which will discipline her freewheeling artistic ebullience. These and other dreams she discusses with her more thoughtful dates – the kind of males she most admires. In lighter moods she likes to go night-clubbing with a date – preferably to hear the sounds of Maynard Ferguson. At home, Lori might treat a boyfriend to her Mexican specialties (“I’m quite a cocinera when it comes to chili and tortillas”), or, on dateless nights, curl up with an adventure novel or make silk-screen prints of urban scenes. Needless to say, she can make our urban scene any time.

Hart Throb

The Californians, wrote O. Henry 60 years ago, are not merely inhabitants of a state − they’re a race of people; and one of the loveliest specimens of that species is 19-year-old September Playmate Dru Hart. In transition from the leisurely pace of growing up in the San Fernando Valley to the rush and responsibility of her new life as a career girl in Los Angeles, Dru manifestly embodies the effervescent enthusiasm and vitality O. Henry attributed to the denizens of that swinging state. Whether at a ball game in Chavez Ravine (she’s a self-admitted baseball nut) or in the course of her hectic days as personal secretary to prominent Los Angeles attorney William Anderson, Miss September enjoys both with a native Californian gusto.

Dru − “It’s short for Drucilla, which makes it obvious why I like to be called Dru” −
also digs such mixed-media recreation as rock ‘n’ roll, surfing and water-skiing with the endless-summer set. Her notably informal speech pattern further places her firmly in the tuned-in generation: “Without making a big thing out of it, I guess I do try to groove to the fun side of life as much as possible. But, at least for me, it doesn’t take a chemical or even surroundings like the Sunset Strip to flip me out. Unless the Dodgers have a big home series − I’ve been mad about them ever since they came to town when I was nine − I spent most of my warm-weather weekends on camping trips with friends. We usually split for a place I discovered with my family − a long, beautifully clear lake called Cachuma Reservoir about a hundred miles up the coast. We sleep overnight on the banks and then hike up into the hills. You’re so completely detached from the city, it’s easy to imagine how isolated the first settlers must have felt.”

Dru currently maintains a small apartment in Van Nuys, halfway between her family’s home and Los Angeles, but she’s looking for a larger place in L.A. “to fill with big bright paper furniture, plastic cushions and a huge stereo system.” Although she’s satisfied at the moment with her career as a lawyer’s girl Friday, she says she might abandon the staid surroundings of law offices and courtrooms for something more glamorous. “If fashion photographers weren’t quite so obsessed with tall, emaciated girls,” says Dru, “I’d like to try my luck at modeling. And I’m turning on to acting, too. For some time, I’ve thought about joining a little theater group; I wish now that I’d taken some dramatic training in school − it would help. But I’ll have to see how things turn out when I move to L.A.” With what Dru has going for her, things should turn out just fine.

Our travel-happy Belgian-born Playmate wants to send the whole world packing

If that adage about travel softening one’s prejudices has any validity, then June Playmate Hedy Scott couldn’t possibly have a biased bone left in her attractive frame. The daughter of an American professional soldier and a Belgian actress, 19-year-old Hedy (“I’m actually twenty, if you use the European system of figuring a person’s age”) was born in Jodoigne, Belgium, and spent a typical Army-brat childhood wandering from base to base with her family. As she recalls it: “We changed mailing addresses the way most people trade cars. By the time I was seven, I’d lived in Paris, New York, St. Louis and Los Angeles, with plenty of stopovers in between. Living out of a suitcase like that is supposed to be bad for most kids, but I found it exciting. Seeing so many new places at such an early age only made a confirmed travel bug out of me.”

Our peripatetic Playmate’s youthful wanderlust was sadly curtailed in 1953, when her father was killed in Korea and she returned to Belgium with her mother. “We lived in Brussels for the next seven years,” Hedy told us, “and Mom managed to eke out a pretty good living, taking small parts in local theatrical productions and making occasional European television commercials. Living in Europe was exhilarating at first, but I couldn’t have been happier when we packed up the old trunk and moved back to California in 1960.”

Following in her mother’s talented footsteps, our artful June miss has had her fair share of initial success as a part-time model and actress since she moved into her own Hollywood digs near the Los Angeles Playboy Club. Despite weekly assignments as a fashion model for L.A. designer Charles Gallet and her appearances in television (Mr. NovakOzzie and Harriet) and films (Harlow), the Belgian-born beauty continues to eschew the possibility of a show-business career. “Sure, I’ve managed to pay the rent and keep up the installments on my ‘56 T-bird,” says Hedy, “but I have no illusions about my acting ability and no desire to become just another Hollywood hopeful. What I’d like to do, someday, is open my own travel agency and find a lifetime partner to help run it.” A position for which there’ll surely be many applicants.
